Electronic cigarettes, also known as electronic pens, electronic pipes and electronic cigars, are vaporizers that work with a lithium battery. While many of them are made to look like regular cigarettes, electronic cigarettes have a liquid cartridge instead of tobacco in order to produce a release of nicotine. The electronic liquid in the cartridge is made of nicotine, propylene glycol and other flavorings, dyes and chemicals. Currently there is no government regulation of electronic cigarettes, therefore, it is not possible to determine exactly which chemicals have electronic cigarettes and the possible health problems associated with this product. [1] Although smokers may use electronic cigarettes as an effort to stop smoking, the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research does not approve them as a safe or effective way to stop smoking.
